The AdWest Team

Jeff Beardsworth
Advertising Director

Jeff Beardsworth has been involved with AdWest since it's inception in 2004. More recently, Jeff has been instrumental in establishing AdWest Marketing Inc. as the stand-alone marketing bureau for the community newspapers associations in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and NWT/NU.

Recognizing that the changing media landscape presents a number of challenges to planners and buyers, Jeff's goal is to position AdWest as the 'Agency for the Agencies' and to encourage clients to use the bureau in that fashion. Prior to the launch of AdWest and AdWest Marketing Inc., Jeff served four years as the Advertising and Marketing Manager for the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association.

He joined the AWNA after a 4-year stint as the Sales and Marketing Director for Edmonton's Arts and Entertainment Weekly, SEE Magazine. During his tenure with AWNA and AdWest Marketing Inc., Jeff has been involved in the development and launch of ComBase, the Community Newspaper Readership study, the Market Analyzer community newspaper planning tool, Community Media Canada.

Crystal MacLaren
Toronto Brand Manager

For over ten years Crystal MacLaren has been a key team player to the strategic development of media companies such as DMG World Media in the UK, The Toronto Star, and Rogers Publishing. Most recently, Crystal worked as the director of brand management for Community Media Canada, the promotional arm of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association. In this role she was responsible for promoting Canada's community newspapers to advertisers and advertising agencies.

Additionally, throughout her professional career, Crystal has successfully acted as an internal consultant and marketing strategist who has researched, analyzed, and identified business opportunities (new launch potential, growth potential of existing products, and acquisition). Based in Toronto, Crystal is thrilled to be a part of the AdWest team and continue her efforts at raising agency awareness of the tools and services designed to facilitate the planning process.

Michele Simmons
Manager, Client Services

Michele brings with her more than 20 years of senior level experience in market research, marketing strategy, media buying and sales management, with a career spanning live entertainment, newspapers (dailies and community weeklies), commercial/residential real estate development, and financial services. She brings significant national and international experience in strategic market positioning (brands, products, experiences) and a keen understanding of the critical role quantitative and qualitative research play in underpinning strategy, from both a client and supplier perspective.

In the newspaper world, she spent a number of years with Sun Media Corporation (QMI), in research, training, and new product development, finishing her time there in the Ad Director’s chair for the chain’s largest urban community weekly.

Michele played a key role in the early development of AdWest’s governance model, operational structure, brand identity, client offerings and tools. Her primary focus is to ensure AdWest continues to: evolve its ability to provide clients with substantial resources that support strategy and planning; explore and develop new opportunities; and, we consistently deliver so seamlessly, we’re like an extension of your planning department.

Among many other things, our resident polymath spends a fair bit of time paying attention to the ever-changing media landscape, and can definitely be relied upon to bring an opinion grounded in having “done her homework”.

Feel free to reach out to Michele and say “hi”…just don’t be surprised if she does so first…
